A Roofer's Terrible Death: P. C. Allen, a roof repairer, while at work on the roof of a three-story building at 10 Hinckley alley, leaned too far over the cornice yesterday forenoon and lost his balance. He fell 50 feet to the ground, struck his head, and was killed instantly. The fall was witnessed by a number of people.
Allen was know as "Major" by his acquaintances, from the fact that he was at one time a Major of the Third Regiment, National Guard of California. He lived at 937 Market Street and had been as asphaltum roofer for several years. He was a native of Boston, unmarried, and about fifty years of age.
Postscript: A burial lot was purchased by the United Friends of California, and expenses paid by the society, of which Peleg Allen was a member. He was interned in Laurel Hill Cemetery, San Francisco, on Dec. 10, 1888, probably in an unmarked grave. Around 1930 most cemeteries within city limits were moved to Colma, San Mateo County. Peleg now rests in Cypress Lawn Cemetery, however there isn't a marked grave to visit.M ii Christopher Cornell ALLEN M iii William Henry Harrison ALLEN F iv Meribah Ann ALLEN M v Frederick S. Civil War: 12 July 1861 mustered into 20th Reg Mass Volunteer Infantry, Company G. Wounded at Antietam on 17 Sep 1862. Eventually died of wounds on 25 Oct 1862.
His tombstone tells the story. There is also a tribute to him displayed in the Town Hall Annex, Westport, Mass.:

Fought in the sanguinary battle of Antietam Sept 17, was again wounded and from the effects which he died Oct 26, 1862, aged 18 yrs, 7 mos., 10 days.
