An obituary for Charles Carroll Howland:

To the Members of the Threottyne Club, Boston, March 1, 1896:
It is with regret that I announce to you the sudden death of our associate, Charles C. Howland, which occurred on the 24th of February last, of a disease of the heart.
He was the son of Stephen and Mary Cornell Howland, and was born in Westport, Mass., October 26, 1832.
He was educated in the schools of Wilbraham, Mass., and Poughkeepsie, NY, after which he entered the employ of Thacher, Shaw & Co., wholesale dry-goods jobbers, with whom he continued until the breaking out of the war.
He was married in 1855 to Margaret A. Ayer, who survives him. He had two children born to him, neither of whom were alive at the time of his death. An adopted daughter still survives.
In the month of May, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company B, Fourth Battalion of Rifles, and on the 25th of May went with that organization to Fort Independence, where he remained doing garrison duty until the 16th of July, when the Fourth Battalion with other companies was mustered into the United States service as the Thirteenth Massachusetts Regiment. On the 29th of July the regiment left Boston for the seat of war.
He participated with the Thirteenth in its campaigns and battles under General Banks, McDowell, and Pope. August 20, 1862, he was commissioned as second lieutenant in the Thirty-Eighth Massachusetts Regiment, and on the 8th of March following was promoted to first lieutenant, and July 25, 1863, to captain in the same regiment. The latter rank he continued to hold until his muster-out at Savannah, Ga., June 30, 1865.
During his service with the Thirty-Eighth he took part in the campaigns under General Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley; under General Banks at Port Hudson; and at Goldsborough under Sherman.
On his return home he engaged in the retail grocery business on Shawmut avenue, Boston, where he continued until his retirement (a few days before his death) having acquired by industry and perseverance, a competence sufficient to meet the requirements of his remaining years. It seems pathetic that just as he was about to enjoy the fruits of his devotion to business he was taken suddenly away.
He was a man of simple and quiet tastes, preferring the attractions of his own home, which was always a happy one, to the excitements to be found elsewhere. The only exceptions were his attendance at our meetings; those of Post 113, G.A.R., of which he was a member; and those of the Loyal Legion, of which he was also a member.
He was one of the men who enlisted as a private soldier before bounties were offered as a inducement to serve one's country, and at a time when personal welfare or advantage received little consideration. As a soldier he was faithful, intelligent, and courageous, attending to his duties without complaint or hesitation, so that his promotion exited no surprise among his comrades of the Thirteenth.
He had a sweet, amiable and warm-hearted nature, and in the company of persons with whom he felt well acquainted he was very jovial. He was the possessor of a quaint humor that never forsook him during his service in the army, even when it would have been excusable had he been otherwise, and which was often exhibited at our gatherings. To us he was a charming companion, and his loss will be keenly felt. We sincerely sympathize with his afflicted widow and daughter in their bereavement.
