Fannie Beatrice Cole, the fourth and youngest child of Silas C. and Frances Smith Cole, was born on December 10, 1886, in Portsmouth, Ohio, where her parents were living at the time on Third Street near Market Street. She received her education in the Portsmouth city schools.

During the 1920’s, Fannie was employed in the office of the Freshour Wholesale Grocery Company in the East End of Portsmouth and continued to make her home with her parents when they moved to the Cole family farm on Galena Pike northwest of Portsmouth. Through the 1930’s and 1940’s she was employed in various Scioto County offices including those of county treasurer, juvenile court, and welfare agencies.
Following the deaths of her parents in the 1930’s Fannie continued to live in the farmhouse until the early 1960’s. Failing health required that she move to Florida where her son Kenneth lived. Now married and with two children, Kenneth taught music in the Tampa-Lakeland area schools. He was a graduate of Ohio University in the late 1930’s where he majored in music. About 1939 he had married Mary Jane West of Cleveland, also an Ohio University graduate.

Amos fought in the Revolutionary War as did his father, Capt. Thomas Cole. Amos served as a private and sergeant in Capt. Asa Kinne's company, South Carolina Continental troops. Biographical Notes provided by Ralph and Richard Howe:
Silas W. Cole was born in Chenango County, New York State, in 1797, the son of Amos and Diana Cole. He was one of a family of thirteen children. Silas attended winter school some eight miles distant, often hiking through knee deep snow. He acquired a standard education that served him well for all business purposes.
In the spring of 1819 he started down the Susquehanna River from Binghampton with another man. Silas took a job at a school among German settlers to teach them English. In August 1819 he walked to Pittsburgh, Penn., and obtained employment at fifty cents per day. Shortly afterward he and a companion started traveling down the Ohio River arriving at Portsmouth, Ohio, at the Market Street landing. Subsequently, he went to visit an uncle residing in Alexandria (the settlement located west of the mouth of the Scioto River, established in the 1790’s and antedating Portsmouth by several years).
On November 22, 1822, Silas W. Cole married Elizabeth Huestin (Huston), settled in Portsmouth, and engaged in the wagon-making business. In 1839 he bought a small farm about six miles northwest of Portsmouth along the Ohio-Erie Canal. Silas and Elizabeth became the parents of eight sons and one daughter: John Wesley, H. Silas (Mack), Amos Burnham, Charles Oscar, James Madison, William Creighton, George Washington, and Caroline.
Seven sons enlisted and six fought in the Civil War on the Union side. Joseph Henry, a lieutenant in the 33rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga.

On November 9, 1861, Elizabeth H. Cole died, and on January 21, 1864, Silas married Mrs. Antoinette Squires. Some years later, on January 6, 1876, Silas died at age 79 following an attack of paralysis. He was buried in the Portsmouth Greenlawn Cemetery.
Note: Dinah Crofoot appears to be the mother of Silas W. Cole. Other researchers have said Lucy Clark (Burnham) which was merely copied many times in D.A.R. membership applications. However, Amos Cole was married four times and didn't wed Lucy Clark until 1816, nineteen years after Silas W. Cole was born.

Mrs. Caroline Cole Barber, a most estimable and lovable woman and mother, died at 12:25 o'clock this morning at her home on East Gallia street.
Mrs. Barber had been a patient sufferer for over two years, having suffered a stroke of paralysis January 1900. Although bedfast since that time she always displayed a happy and patient spirit, and her death was a resigned one that was a great consolation to her mourning daughters who lovingly surrounded the death bed and watched the soul of their beloved parent take its flight to that eternal home of happiness and glory. Mrs. Barber was conscious to the last and she bade her weeping children a last farewell in her accustomed beautiful and affectionate manner.
The deceased was born in this city February 9, 1833, and was the only daughter of the late Silas W. and Elisabeth Huston Cole. Her entire life was spent in this city and vicinity. She was united in marriage fifty-two years ago with William E. Barber and a portion of their married life was spent at Wheelersburg. Six children survive her and mourn the death of a kind and affectionate mother: Mrs. Lloyd Cole of Iowa; and Mrs. Frances McColm, Mrs. Thorton Barber, the Misses Emma and Jessie Barber, and William Barber, all of this city.
Mrs. Barber was a member of the Bigelow Methodist church, uniting with that congregation in early life. She was always an earnest, active Christian, and her death is regretted by the brethren and sisters with whom she had been so long associated in the worship of her Redeemer. A benevolent neighbor and an earnest friend her loss is mourned by the entire community.
