John BERKEY 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born 9 May 1775 in Bedford County, PA. He married Susannah WHIPS on 24 Mar 1801. John died about Apr 1823 in Somerset, Perry County, Ohio. He was buried in a cemetery east of Somerset.
Biographical Notes for John Berkey:
Note that there are numerous spelling variations of the name: Burki, Barkey, Burkey, Birky, etc. Burgi is a common name in Switzerland. The Berkey ancestors originally came from Switzerland and Southern Germany. Many were Swiss Mennonites and Amish who came to America in the 18th and 19th centuries to escape religious persecution. Most settled in western Pennsylvania.
John Berkey (probably spelled Barkey) was born May 9, 1775. On March 24, 1801, he married Susannah Whip. In 1818, they moved to Perry County, Ohio, and raised a family of ten children. John was a blacksmith and farmer. It is said that he was unable to speak English. He died in 1823 and is buried two miles east of Somerset, Ohio.
John Berkey's Will (dated March 27, 1823) is on file at the Perry County, Ohio, courthouse. It lists his wife, Susannah, and children John, David, Daniel, Samuel, Henry, Martin, Michael, Rachel, and Lidia. Another daughter, Catherine, died in 1806 at age two.
Conflicting information exists about John Berkey's parents and ancestors. Even the most authoratative and complete compilation, The Berkey Book, seemed unsure where to list our John Berkey. They decided that John's father was most likely Christian Berkey, who was born 1733 in Berks County, PA. In 1768 Christian married Catherine Seiler who was born about 1742 in Germany. Christian died about 1789 and Catherine in 1799 in Somerset County, PA. Christian Berkey’s father, Jacob Beirki, (born 1698, died 1763) arrived in America in 1733.
The other account of John Berkey comes from DAR application 156227 ADD 186. It was based on family records, primarily Bible records written in German. Supposedly, the Bible had been translated and copied before it disappeared. According to this story, our subject was actually John Berkey III. His parents were John Berkey, Jr. (1745-1815) and Sarah Schmidt, both born in Germany. This family can be traced back to 1615 in Germany.
There was indeed a Private John Berkey, Jr. listed among returning soldiers in 1780 of 6th Class, Captain Philip Gable's 2nd Company, Fifth Battalion, County of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. However, other than family records, the DAR application provides no documentation really connecting our Berkeys to this Patriot. Moreover, The Berkey Book lists numerous John Berkeys but none that were born 1745 in Germany.
The DAR application included one other document deserving consideration. It's a notarized copy dated March 15, 1929, of a tombstone inscription taken from a grave near Fultonham, Muskingum County, Ohio, in the Lutheran Cemetery: "Susanna Whips, wife of John Berkey III; Born 2-10-1784; Died 7-26-1849; Married 3-24-1801; daughter of Benjamin and Susanna Whips."
Susannah WHIPS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 was born on 2 Feb 1784 in Ann Arundel, MD. She wes John BERKEY on 24 Mar 1801. Susannah reportedly died on 26 Jul 1849 in Perry County, Ohio, and was buried in a Lutheran Cemetery, Near Fultonham, Muskingum, Ohio.
There is conflicting information about the parents and ancestry of Susannah Whips:
DAR Application dated 1929 for Member 156227, Mrs. Nellie Virginia Hall Marker, claims that Susannah Whips was the daughter of Benjamin Whips, a patriot from Maryland. During the Revolutionary War he served as a Private in the Maryland Line. Long afterwards, on 17 June 1836, he applied for a pension while living in Perry County, Ohio. Benjamin Whips (or Whipp) was born 5 Aug 1750 in Ann Arundel County, Maryland. On 6 July 1778 he married Susanna Rebecca Pearce in Ann Arundel. She was born in 1757 and died 1801 in Maryland. Benjamin Whipp died on 21 Jan 1837 and is buried in Rehoboth Cemetery, Perry County, Ohio.
Benjamin Whips moved to Ohio about 1821 along with several of his children. By 1850 there were many Whips living in the county. It would seem reasonable that our Susannah Whips Berkey was also there due to family connections. Moreover, DAR Application 156227 also includes the following notarized suppporting document with an inscription from a tombstone taken from a grave near Fultonham, Muskingum County, Ohio, in the Lutheran Cemetery: "Susanna Whips, wife of John Berkey III: born 2-10-1784; died 7-26-1849; married 3-24-1801; daughter of Benjamin and Susanna Whips."
Rachel Berkey stated in the 1880 census that her parents were born in PA and MD which supports the information above. Otherwise, little evidence has been found that our Susannah Berkey was a daughter of Benjamin Whips.
Another possibility should be considered. Rachel Berkey said in her own written words that her parents came to Ohio from Bedford County, PA in 1818. There was a Last Will and Testament for a John Whip recorded (Will Book 3, Page 3) in Cumberland Valley Township, Bedford County, PA, dated 4 Sep 1830. His wife's name was Christina. One of his children was beloved daughter Susanna Berky. This could just be another person with the same name. However another daughter named in the Will, Catharine Basserman, was also found in Perry County about 1830. In conclusion, additional research is recommended to determine the true pedigree of our Susanna Whips Berkey.
