Charles Buebke was born in Germany on August 12, 1881. His parents were Margaret Muller and Conrad Buebke. Charles had a brother, Phillip. The family came to the United States in 1883 or 1884 settling in Portland, Oregon. Charles married Anne Cooper about 1903. They had a son, Carl Cooper Buebke, born in 1911.
Charles Buebke was an iron worker for most of his life in the Portland area. When he died on February 22, 1940, his last occupation was listed as Superintendent at the Columbia Wire and Iron Works company.

A native of Seattle and printer for over 60 years. He was a member of the Seattle Central Lions Club, American Legion Post #13, Eureka Lodge #20, F.&A.M., Seattle Valley Scottish Rite, Nile Temple Shrine, and the Thursday Shrine Luncheon Club.
He is survived by a daughter, two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

William Leon Cooper, 71, veteran Seattle printer, died in a hospital Wednesday evening after a long illness. His home was at 5911 59th Ave N.E..
Born in Perry County, Ohio, Mr. Cooper came West in 1889 with his parents. He settled in Seattle about 1900. Mr. Cooper was owner and operator of the Seattle Type Setting Company from 1910 until 1946. After his retirement, he worked for The Times as a linotype operator.
He was a member of Local 202, Seattle Typographical Union; Wallingford Lodge 267, F. & A.M.; Scottish Rite bodies and Nile Temple of the Shrine. He was a past patron of Wallingford Chapter 204, Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving are his wife, Nellie E.; a son, William M. Cooper, Seattle; a sister, Mrs. Ann Buebke, Portland, Oregon; and a brother, Edgar Cooper, Los Angeles.
Rose Croix services will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday forenoon in Forkner's chapel with burial in Evergreen.

Isaac COOPER [Parents] [scrapbook] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 was born about 1780 in New Jersey. He married Phebe SAYRE. Isaac passed away on 9 May 1836 in Clayton Twp, Perry County, Ohio. He rests in Hopewell Baptist Cemetery, Perry County, Ohio.
Isaac Cooper was born about 1780 in New Jersey. His middle initial was probably "W." He was our first Cooper ancestor to enter the wilderness of Ohio after it became a state in 1803. Isaac was a pioneer farmer and raised a family of seven children. He is buried in Hopewell Baptist Cemetery, Perry County, Ohio, and his grave marker reads "In Memory of Isaac Cooper who died May 9, 1836 in the 56 year of his age."
The following excerpt is from the book, A Centennial Biographical History of Hancock County, Ohio, page 443, published in 1903 (The subject of the biographical sketch on page 443 is Isaac W. Cooper, a native of Hancock county, Ohio, named after his grandfather):
" Mr. Cooper is of English descent. His grandfather (also Isaac W. Cooper) was born in England, but came to this country and settled in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where his son, Amos Cooper, was born in 1808. Later, in the year 1812, the grandfather, Isaac W. Cooper, moved with his family out into the great new state of Ohio, which a few years before had been a part of the Western Reserve country, and located in Perry county. When the war of 1812 broke out he sided with the country of his adoption and was a soldier in that war fighting against the English and for the United States. Amos Cooper, father of our subject, Isaac W. Cooper, came with his parents in 1812 from Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, to Perry county, Ohio. Later, in the year 1832, Amos Cooper moved to Hancock county, Ohio."
Although the above story is printed in an impressive, authoritative book, it has been very difficult to confirm. Isaac's biography was contributed by a grandson who never met his grandfather. There appears to be some confusion with prior Cooper generations. Although several facts are clearly wrong, the story is probably true for the most part.
What public records exist for Isaac Cooper? He first appears in the 1810 census for Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Note that Fayette was a part of Westmoreland County, PA until 1783. Later, in 1820 and 1830, Isaac's family is shown in the U.S. Census for Perry County, Ohio. Prior to 1850, U.S. Census records were merely statistical in nature, only listing the head of household by name. Exact ages of persons were not provided.
Isaac's first son, Amos, was born in 1808 in Pennsylvania. In April 1811, Isaac Cooper purchased several sections of land from the U.S. Government in what would eventually become Clayton Township, Perry County, Ohio. The land documents list him as a resident of Fayette County, PA, in 1811. Isaac and his family moved into Ohio in 1812 where his second son, Ruel, was born. Much later, in 1834, Isaac Cooper would purchase more land from the U.S. Government in Hancock county, Ohio.
According to the National Archives, there was a Private Isaac Cooper in the War of 1812, First Regiment (Col. John DeLong's), Ohio Militia, but no other details are available. A few family notes handed down say that Isaac served at Fort Meigs in northwestern Ohio. Also, that exposure to the nearby Great Black Swamp might have caused lasting health problems that eventually contributed to his death.
Isaac Cooper died May 9, 1836, still a resident of Perry County, Ohio. On June 18, 1836, his son, Ruel, was appointed administrator of the estate of Isaac Cooper, deceased. By then Isaac's oldest son, Amos, was a resident of Hancock County, so Ruel was appointed administrator. Ruel was both an heir and the administrator of Isaac's estate. Other heirs were Isaac's widow, Phebe, and his other children: Joel Cooper, Amos Cooper, John Cooper, Israel Cooper, Isaac Cooper, Rueben Cooper and Martha Cooper. With property in several counties, the estate was not fully settled until 1843 but can be traced by numerous court records.
On September 6, 1839, in Perry County, Joel Cooper was appointed guardian of Isaac's minor children: Martha, age 11, Isaac, 19, Israel, 14, and Rueben, 16. Joel was relieved of guardianship in March 1847. By the way, early census data indicate there might have been other children who died young, a daughter born between 1800-1810 and a son born 1810-1820. Neither was mentioned in the estate records of Isaac in 1836.
Although sources above suggest England or Pennsylvania, Isaac Cooper originally came from New Jersey, according to family stories told years later. His wife, Phebe, declared herself for the U.S. Census as born in New Jersey. There could be truth in all stories, depending on the time line and migration path to Ohio. Also, it appears Isaac had at least one brother, James Cooper, who joined the migration to Perry County, Ohio. The 1810 census for Fayette County, PA, lists three families of Isaac, James, and John Cooper, all about the same ages, on the same page of the census. Other records mirror their activities and move to Ohio. Later publications refer to several sons of Isaac and James as being cousins. James Cooper (1780-1871) stated that he was born in New Jersey and his wife in Pennsylvania.
Although much is still unknown, it can be said with confidence that Isaac Cooper was a greatly respected man of ambition, determination, and courage. At least six descendents were named in his honor, and two grandsons, both named Isaac W. Cooper, fought in the Civil War.
Phebe SAYRE [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born on 20 Aug 1785 in New Jersey. She married Isaac COOPER. Phebe died after 1869 in probably Missouri or Kansas.
It's frustrating that so little documentation exists about Phebe's life. There is substantial evidence that Phebe was a daughter of Reuel Sayre, although one story suggested her maiden name was Hull. The Hulls, Coopers, and Sayres were neighbors, but no record has been found of a Phebe Hull. A sister of Phebe, Rachel Sayre, married John Hull.
Following the death of Isaac Cooper in 1836, his widow, "Pheby" Cooper, was listed as head-of-household in the 1840 U.S. Census for Clayton Township, Perry County, Ohio. Through the mid-1840's Phebe was involved in numerous land transactions in both Perry and Hancock counties as the estate of Isaac Cooper was sold or divided among heirs.
By the 1850 census, Phebe was living with her daughter, Martha, and son-in-law, Nelson Miller, in nearby Fairfield County, Ohio. Based on subsequent census data, she appears to have lived the rest of her life with the Nelson Miller family. By 1860 the family had headed West, residing in Keokuk County, Iowa. In 1870 they were in Van Buren Township, Newton County, Missouri.
This 1870 census was the last record of Phebe Cooper. She gave her age as 87 and place of birth as New Jersey. By 1875 the Millers were living in Cherokee County, Kansas, however Phebe was not with them. Being so elderly and after living with the Millers for over twenty years, it seems unlikely that she would return to Ohio. As yet, neither a death record nor a burial site have been located in Missouri, Kansas, or Ohio.
Like a true pioneer, Phebe lived her entire life pushing the American frontier from New Jersey to Missouri, leaving any comforts behind, traveling by foot or wagon, facing untold hardships, and rebuilding five times in newly formed states. She had to have been a remarkable, resourceful woman of undeniable spirit and fortitude.Additional notes on our Sayre heritage:
Our first Sayre ancestor to come to America was Thomas Sayre. He was born 1597 in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England. By 1638 he was in Lynn, Massachusetts. In 1640 Thomas Sayre was one of the eight men who landed in the wilds of Long Island and founded the town of Southampton. He built a house and became a prominent figure in the development of Southampton. His house stood until about 1920.
The father of our Phebe (Sayre) Cooper was Reuel Sayre. He represented the fourth generation of Sayres born in America.
Reuel Sayre was born July 1754, in Salem County, New Jersey, a son of Thomas and Rachel (Dennis) Sayre. Reuel was a volunteer in the New Jersey Militia in the Revolutionary War. Three brothers also served. Reuel Sayre escaped the British massacre at Hancock's Bridge, NJ, in the early morning of March 21, 1778, however one brother was killed and the other captured.
Following the war, Reuel married Rachel Ludlum in January 1779. She died in 1793, and Reuel then married Hope Sheppard in April 1794. He fathered twelve children by these marriages, however only five or six children reached adulthood.
Reuel and his family moved from New Jersey to Pennsylvania around 1795. They were living in Fayette County, PA for the 1810 census. Isaac Cooper resided in the same county. The Sayre family entered Ohio in about 1815. For the 1820 census they were living in Clayton Township, Perry County, Ohio. Reuel Sayre was listed right next to (or in the same household) with Isaac and Phebe (Sayre) Cooper. Three of Reuel's other children (Rachel, Reuel, Jr., and Hope) married and settled in Perry County. Another, Reuben, settled in Athens County, Ohio.
Reuel Sayre was a farmer and an innkeeper. At one time there was a Sayre village, postoffice, and general store in Perry County. Reuel died in 1841, age 86, and was buried in Hopewell Baptist Cemetery.

He was a member of the Multnomah Athletic Club and the Theta Chi fraternity of the University of Oregon. At the family's request, no service will be held.

Amos COOPER [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 was born on 26 Mar 1808 in Fayette County, PA. He married Elizabeth A. POE on 20 Nov 1834 in Portage, Hancock County, Ohio. Amos passed away on 18 Aug 1879 in Findlay, Hancock, Ohio, and was buried in Indian Green Cemetery.
Amos Cooper was born 26 Mar 1808 in Pennsylvania, the oldest son of Isaac and Phebe Cooper. Most of his childhood was spent in Perry County, Ohio. In 1833, still a young man, he moved to Hancock County, Ohio, and purchased a land grant from the U.S. government. In November of 1834 he married Elizabeth Poe. Their marriage was the first in Portage Township and the first in the newly built Sand Ridge Presbyterian Church. Amos and Elizabeth raised six children. Two of his sons, Jacob and Isaac, fought for the Union side in the Civil War. Amos was a farmer most of his life. He was a cousin of Judge John Cooper, another early settler in Hancock from Perry County. Elizabeth passed away in 1872, and Amos died 18 Aug 1879.

Amos Cooper was born March 25th, 1808, and died August 18, 1879, aged 71 years 4 months and 23 days. He was born in the state of Pennsylvania. At the age of 4 years he removed with his parents to Perry County, Ohio. In 1832 he moved to Hancock County, and in 1834 married Elizabeth Poe and settled in Portage Township. There he lived and prospered until the death of his wife in March 1872, since which time he had lived and enjoyed life with his children. He left six children, all alive, of full age, and prosperous. Mr. Cooper became a member of the regular Baptist Church, called the Findlay church, by baptism in 1840, and so continued to the last. He was a kind father, a good neighbor, a devoted Christian, a kind husband, and truly loved by all who knew him. Rev. A. Ellis (Another obituary, essentially the same, appeared in the Hancock Courier, August 28, 1879, page 3).
